Supporting the university’s mission of transforming lives and serving society has always been the purpose of the University of Illinois Foundation. Scholarships are often the catalyst of transformation for Illinois students. In 2023 at its annual meeting, the UI Foundation announced the creation of the Foundation to Success Scholarship endowment to provide one student from each of its three universities with a scholarship annually, with the option to renew for three more years.

The first winners of the Foundation to Success scholarship were announced at the Foundation’s Annual Meeting on November 14. Freshman Charles Serrahn (UIS), freshman Mascis Larson (UIC), and freshman Alex Gorczowski (Illinois) were announced as the initial recipients.

Serrahn is a graduate of Dunlap High School in Dunlap, Ill. He is majoring in business administration and is a member of the Prairie Stars cross country team.

A graduate of Lane Tech High School in Chicago, Larson is majoring in Computer Science. He is involved with UIC’s Social Gaming Club and its chapter of Students for a Democratic Society.

Gorczowski graduated from Lincoln Way East High School in Frankfort, Ill. He is majoring in computer science and statistics and is also involved in several clubs and intramural sports at his university.

Since announcing the Foundation to Success scholarship program last fall, the Foundation has worked to secure gifts for the endowment with a goal of $1.25 million, including up to $250,000 in matching funds from the Foundation.
