Retired UIS Professor Gives Back to Help People Get Where They Want to Be

The arts were part of Sharron LaFollette’s life long before she became a UIS professor and donor. Her father was a music teacher and performed in community theater, while her mother helped make costumes. Sharron learned instruments and played in bands, but ultimately discovered her own passion was biology.

That freedom to find her path is something she now hopes to give others.

Sharron’s career eventually brought her to UIS, where she embraced the University’s commitment to teaching, research and service. In retirement, that connection continues. She volunteers as an usher at the UIS Performing Arts Center and has included UIS in her estate plans to support internships in two areas that have shaped her life: performing arts and environmental health reporting at NPR Illinois.

For Sharron, internships give students the opportunity to step beyond the classroom, experience a field firsthand and discover where their own interests might lead.

“I like the concept of helping people get where they want to be,” she said.

Her support will help create opportunities for future generations of students to gain meaningful professional experience while exploring careers that align with their passions.

“Sharron’s generosity reflects the transformative impact internships can have on a student’s future,” said Vice Chancellor Gabe Cagwin. “By investing in hands‑on learning experiences, she is helping students build confidence, develop professional skills and discover pathways that can shape the course of their lives. Her legacy will be felt by UIS students for years to come.”

More than anything, Sharron hopes her giving inspires others to consider the difference they can make, regardless of the size of their gift.

“You don’t have to be a millionaire,” she said.

Her legacy is a reminder that giving isn’t simply about what we leave behind. It’s about creating opportunities for others to move forward.
